I pulled my calf muscle at volleyball last night so I wanted to try and run, but take it easy at the same time. So I went down to the Y when Mark went to his volleyball game. I stretched out really well then ran one mile. My calf wasn’t loosening up any so I walked a fast mile. Then I walked a slow mile. Then I stretched out for about 20 minutes. When all was said and done, it was about an hour and 15 minute workout total.
Now, I’m a people watcher. It doesn’t matter where I am or what I’m doing. I love to watch people. The track at the Y looks down on the basketball courts and the rock climbing wall. There’s a ballet bar next to the track to stretch on. A bench or two. A water fountain. Overall, a very good place to get a workout and some people watching.
In no particular order, some of the things I noticed:
- During my fast walk I was noticing a girl in front of me that took a step every time I took a step. She walked with the same rhythm, almost as if she had the same song playing on her iPod that I was listening to. Nothing weird about that. Except that I was gaining on her. I’m a little slow on the draw and couldn’t figure out why I was gaining on someone walking to the same beat as me. But, oh yes…my legs go from here to china! A little difference in distance covered between a 36 inch stride and a 21 inch stride (guessing on hers). So, I passed her. I win!
- Um, older gentleman walked about 3 laps (I lapped him, too….just making a notation) then stopped by the ballet bar to stretch. I was nearing the end of my walk and wanted to use the bar to stretch but I kept walking until he was finished. During one of his stretches he had his foot up on the bar with the outside of his ankle actually leaning against the bar, his knee bent, and him leaning toward the bar like he was trying to stretch his hip flexor. He was getting himself into this position as I walked by. When that lap was finished he was in the process of getting out of the position. I am one lucky duck! His foot someone hung up between the bar and the wall and the contortions/hopping/desparate grabbing at the bar to get unstuck before he fell made me smile. Just a little bit though. OK, fine! I almost laughed out loud.
- Old dude climbing the rock wall! Let me preface by saying that I was inspired to see someone that looked to be nearing 70 climbing up the rock wall. The problem was that in order to keep his balance (assuming this is the reason) he climbed with his feet well over shoulder width apart and slightly bent. As he ascended he would occasionally stop, knees to the wall, butt out, hand down between the legs to pull the rope to give him some slack. Holy cow, it took every ounce of self control to not break out into a fit of juvenile giggles. This was good enough for me to snap a picture with my camera. Don’t worry, I didn’t zoom in, was moving so the pic is fuzzy, so I won’t be giving away his identity at all! His privacy will remain in tact as I giggle at the mental image of him yanking his rope!
Good workout. Topped it off with Mexican food and a Margarita and then a soak in the hot tub. Good workout!
